Road to Boston

If your goal is to become a Boston (Marathon) Qualifier in the near future, then you need special mentoring treatment as the road to Boston is not an easy task. Most runners need to make several attempts at qualifying for Boston, and a large majority will never succeed. But, being a BQer bestows upon you an elitist status as others know that you are among the best in the world, in your age group, and it is an attempt worth pursuing.

Whilst there are several marathons across the world, the top six are the Boston, New York, Berlin, London, Tokyo and the Chicago Marathon. And amongst these, the Boston Marathon is the most prized as no other Marathon can match this race for its color, glamour, prestige and a history stretching now 117 years.

About Boston Marathon:
The Boston Marathon is the “Olympics for amateur marathoners”. What makes the Boston Marathon so alluring is its qualification norms wherein you must complete a certified marathon within a challenging time based on your specific age group.

The demand for entries to the Boston Marathon is so fierce that merely achieving your qualifying standard – above - doesn’t guarantee an entry and you should be around 5 minutes faster to feel some assurance. Registration opens in September
for the following year and the BAA organizers follow a rolling application process which gave faster runners priority on registration.

Wave 1
: Registration opens to those who run a time that is 20 or more minutes faster than their qualifying standard
Wave 2: After 2 days, those who run 10:00 – 19:59 minutes faster than their standard get the opportunity to register
Wave 3: Another 2 days later and anyone who ran 5:00 – 9:59 minutes faster than the standard gets to register
Wave 4: Finally only a full week after registration opened do those who scrapped through the strict qualifying standard are able to register.

Becoming a Boston Qualifier is not for the meek. Mere talent isn’t enough and you need to be ready to pay your dues. Many aspire but most fall short.
